The Wokingham South squad recorded another victory in their quest for promotion in their South Open League fixture this weekend, leaving them in good shape for promotion with 3 more matches to go.
The first two goals of the match were scored by Sussex tigers leaving Wokingham a little shaken but by no means defeated! Wokingham fought on through a tough quarter and finished the first quarter 9 – 7 down.
Wokingham returned to the second quarter with Charlene Cox taking over WD, jenny Atmore moving to WA and sarah Missen moving to C. The Wokingham side and battled on through the quarter against a tough Sussex Tigers. Tracey Stone and Hayley Blackwell made many interceptions in the semi circle to prevent the very accurate Sussex goal shooter putting up her shots. Wokingham struggled to create space down the centre court to reach the shooters but Wokingham did pull the match back to a draw 16-16 at the half time break..
Caroline Warman at GA and Kim Holt at GD provided fresh legs in the third quarter for Wokingham who began to pressurise a now hesitant Sussex Tigers. Jenny Atmore had a fantastic game against a very physical WA/C and created great options through the centre court working as a unit with Sarah Missen. Caroline Warman and Kelly Flook were able to increase the scoring rate for Wokingham as both the shooters made good use of the opportunities presented to them, and took the team into the lead by 25 -28 at the third break.
With no changes made in the final quarter, the game was hard fought to the final whistle. Wokingham’s sheer grit, determination and great team sprit was enough to enable them to prevent Sussex Tigers from picking up an extra point from the game. The Wokingham defence trio of Hayley, Kim and Charlene continued to make outstanding interceptions; Jenny Atmore and Sarah Missen continued to dominate the centre third and their excellent court play set up the shooting unit of Kelly Flook and Caroline Warman allowing Wokingham to finish the match 37-30 up.
Overall, this was a good squad performance that showed the hidden depths of the team. The Wokingham team proved that they could achieve a winning performance using each player’s versatility and ability to work hard! Many thanks for the great support from those on the sidelines and the bench.
